About Dan
Hello! I'm a trainer with 10+ years experience with a background in theatre and improvisational comedy. My goal is to help you create a positive relationship with your body, how it moves, and the things you use to fuel it, while having a blast in the process. I look forward to working with you!
My favorite exercise
It's a tie between the suitcase deadlift to carry and breathing compressions; which I'll explain during our first session :)
My favorite quote
"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer." --Rainer Maria Rilke
My training philosophy
You have to love yourself. I spent years exercising for all the wrong reasons; not liking the way I looked, judging myself by other people's standards, and constantly worrying about the numbers on the scale. But after a couple of decades of floating around the fitness world, I've finally come to a point where I've realized that the most important thing with all of this health and fitness hullabaloo is to do the work to be a person that you truly care about, and to really love your body, all the amazing things it can do, the infinite possibilities found in cooking and nourishing yourself, and that we're all just big ole sacks of meat and bones, so we might as well be cool to everyone and have as great a time as we can while we're here, cus (SPOILER) we ain't gettin out alive I can tell ya that.
My training experience
I started lifting weights and running for fun when I was a sophomore in high school back in the olden days, what the kids would refer to as "the late 90's," when low rise sandblasted jeans and long sleeve Structure t-shirts ruled supreme. Flash forward to "the early 2010s," when I attended the National Personal Training Institute (a ridiculous name, I know, but it really was a fantastic educational experience). I shortly thereafter began working at an Equinox on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood where I saw a wide variety of clientele varying from 20 year old violin prodigies to 30 year old retired college basketball players to 75 year old opera coaches and everyone in between. I developed a real love for the business, and found great pride and pleasure in overseeing the tier 3+ advancement groups as they came through. The chilled eucalyptus towels didn't hurt either. In 2017 I struck out on my own to provide more focused in-home services away from the big box corporate gyms filled with EDM and too many damn mirrors; which now brings us to "the early 2020s," where low cut jeans are making a comeback and I'm pretty sure there's another Jurassic Park coming out, and time doesn't matter anymore, but being strong and pain free, and creating and sticking to positive habits DO matter, so I suggest we focus on those.
