My name is Zak. I am a health and fitness coach specializing in helping people to gain strength and lose weight through functional movement and nutrition.
Believe it or not, I was sick and overweight for the better part of my life. At my heaviest, I weighed over 350 pounds. My sedentary lifestyle and convenience-food diet were causing an ever-growing list of health issues. I was literally eating myself to death!
My "ah-ha" moment came a few years ago when I visited the doctor for back pain … again! This time, the doctor said, “You're not getting any younger. Your back hurts because you need to lose weight, and you need to lose lot of it.” I laughed it off, “Wow, Doc! Tell me how you really feel!” He looked me dead in the eye and said, “I’m serious. You DON'T want chronic back pain in your thirties.” He had my attention. For as long as I could remember, I had been told that I needed to lose weight. But no one had ever told me why or even how. Maybe it was the doctor’s blunt delivery, or perhaps it was the pain I felt that finally made me realize how serious this was getting. Either way, this time really hit home. Suddenly, my defensive smile faded, and all I could say was, “Doc, I really want to change, but I don’t know how.”
The time for action had come. I asked for help and listened. I lost 60 pounds in the first six weeks. As my body changed, I noticed my life was beginning to change as well. I had more self-esteem, more energy, my joints hurt less, and it was even easier to smile. I got off all of my prescription medications, and I could even think more clearly. I began to look forward to exercising; it was always the highlight of my day. I was learning a lot about myself; finding an inner strength that I didn’t know existed. Every time I picked up that barbell, it was a metaphor for life: If I am consistent, if I act with a purpose, if I put in the work, good things come. My life was transforming, one day at a time.
7 years and 130 pounds later...
