About Kayla

I have been in the fitness industry since early 2010, and a certified personal trainer since 2013. I love watching the human body transform with hard work and diligence, and I love seeing people surprise themselves with what they are capable of! As a mother of three, I find that being fit and active is a huge part of the process in keeping up with my kids, and I want to provide that same ability to my clients.

A typical session with me includes a dynamic warm-up followed by small circuits or supersets. I gear my workouts toward what my client is hoping to accomplish. This means that sometimes you'll have normal, standard, everyday exercises, sure. But more often than not you'll probably find yourself doing exercises that require you to engage multiple muscle groups or even your entire body all at once.

My favorite client story

Mike Frenchick, who was recently interviewed for the Washington Post about the importance of heart health, is my absolute favorite client that I've ever had. I started working with Mike on Veterans Day 2014, after pushing and pushing and pushing for him just to allow me to do an assessment with him FOR FREE at my gym Sport&Health (now One Life Fitness) in Virginia. He caved, and trained with me for 14 months before my position and schedule changed and I had to pass him off to a different trainer. In the 14 months that I trained him, it only took the first 5 months for Mike to drop 50lbs from his starting weight with me. Mike continued training after I passed him to his current trainer, Sahar, and has never stopped, and has actually lost additional weight since! In October 2018, though, Mike suffered from sudden cardiac arrest and was placed in a medically induced coma. He had a quadruple bypass surgery, and several weeks of cardiac rehabilitation afterwards. But the good news? He's ALIVE. He's HEALTHY. And his recovery time? Cut significantly because he was in such great shape when the incident happened. Mike is the perfect example of WHY everyone should work hard to be in shape regardless of their age or their history. Had Mike never made the decision to train with me, his recovery would have been significantly longer, and much more gruesome... if he had a recovery at all. Mike and I still talk almost daily, and I am so proud of what he has done and accomplished in his journey, and so ecstatic that I was the initial push to get him there.

My favorite exercise

Burpees, and all their variations.

My favorite quote

Your future is created by what you do TODAY, not tomorrow.

My training philosophy

There is always progress to be made.

My training experience

I started training as soon as I got certified in 2013 with a company called Guiding Fitness in Clarksville, TN. I stayed with them until I moved to VA. In Virginia I worked at both Gold's Gym and Sport&Health. I was with Sport&Health from September 2014 to 2016 when I moved back home here to Indiana and worked at LA Fitness until July 2017. I left LA Fitness to recover from an injury that they would not allow me the time or the accommodations at work to recover, and trained under myself as "Train By Kayla".
