About Joan

am a strength coach. I own my studio in Union City, NJ where I train my clients 1-1 (and maybe you!) in a private, clean and safe space. I am on the border of Hoboken, Jersey City and Union City. I own my own private training studio, so it will be just YOU and I. My studio has a free parking lot for all visitors. I am a certified Strength & Conditioning coach. I hold a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science & Nutrition. I have 14 years of experience working with a wide variety of populations. 10 years in NYC + 4 years in Hoboken & JC. Let me help you get strong and feel good. My world is entirely fitness and wellness. My ultimate goal is to give you autonomy over your body, to bring your strength to light, to meet you halfway with what you seek and what you might need. My time is your time, so every moment we spend moving and learning is built solely around you. I love fitness and coaching, let me show you what we could do together. I coach because I want you to settle into your body and begin to notice. I combine rebellion and a sense of individuality while remaining mindful and moving with intention. That idea spills over into the every day training; not only using scientific principles to hone one’s multi faceted strength while carefully curating exercise tenets but also allowing yourself to freely do more of what feels right. The idea of FEELING and MOVING simultaneously is the point, to eliminate the idea that training is a chore or a check on your to do list, it’s being human and enjoying the ‘f outta that. How cool would it be to get strong af, be more in your body while also LEARNING about the body from a nerd like me? Let me make you STRONG!

My favorite client story

A question I find challenging to answer because I have numerous favorites.

I suppose my favorite would be Michelle. I met Michelle on another platform, Thumbtack. Our schedules didn't align and so I considered asking my former business partner to train her but before going down that road, we tried the only time we could make work.

5am in the morning.

At first it was brutal for both of us. I'm a 6:30am and on gal. After just one week, she was elated with how she felt, what she's learned and the autonomy she's gained so quickly. Although strength and physical change happens over long periods of time, she had recongized the value in me, and I had found the 3:30am worth it for Michelle.

Two and half years later, Michelle is training 5 days a week, at 5am, with me, in my private studio. She watched me grow, and I watched her get ever stronger me (yes, seriously. She's a special one). We both couldn't believe the irony of almost NOT working together, but deciding to make the commitment to each other. I could go on and on about this, but these stories tend to happen every so often. I become a part of your life, and you become a part of mine. It's more than just reps and sets, it's an experience.

My favorite exercise

How can I pick ONE thing?

The barbell clean. I think it's one of the most complex, nuanced, beautiful and powerful movements. This is not a movement I do with the general population. But for me, personally, I LOVE it.

Secondly, I love deadlifts and pull ups. Two movements I find that most human beings should be doing.

My favorite quote

How you do anything is how you do everything.

My training philosophy

I do not have a philosophy. It feels limiting. I am a conglomerate of things.

My training experience

As an athlete, or as an trainer? I'll go with the former.

Former/Current:
Gymnast
Dancer
Tennis Player
Swimmer
Olympic Lifter
Sprinter

Other than that, if it's the other thing, I've been a trainer for 15 years. I have a master's degree in my field. I made it a point to create a foundation on which I can assemble strong pillars and columns on.
