About Ryan

Ryan is the Co-Owner of Myo Durham Fitness and Physical Therapy in Downtown Durham, NC. The fitness studio offers personal training that is aligned with client goals and uses the fundamentals of both strength training and physical therapy to achieve excellent outcomes. Ryan is the developer of the MyoFit Strength Training system.


Ryan Upper is a veteran of the US Navy and the US Army. Ryan swam and played water polo through college and is a current member of the Triangle Water Polo Club and US Masters Swimming. After graduating college, Ryan coached collegiate water polo and swimming at Riverside City College, the University of Arizona, San Diego State University, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Duke University. He has coached NCAA and National-level water polo athletes. Ryan is certified as a Gold-Level USRPT Swim Coach, a USA Water Polo Pace Coach, and a MyoFit Master Instructor. Ryan is a published author and has produced multiple case studies on high-performance training. After a 2-year period of writing performance articles for Water Polo Planet, Ryan began researching innovative Ultra-Short Race-Pace Training (USRPT) concepts for swimming and water polo as well as MyoFit Strength Training concepts for weight lifting, running, and cycling.


My training philosophy

A little bit of consistency is the key to long-term improvement. Most beginners will improve dramatically with only 2 sessions a week. Once that consistency is established it is easier for folks to add other activities and workouts into their daily schedule. Immediately jumping into a 4-5 day routine is tough and can quickly lead to burnout. I constantly work with clients to identify when more workouts are appropriate for their training level.

My training experience

Ryan opened the Myo Durham fitness studio in 2019.
