And I am always honored when corporations like Marriott, schools like Berkeley Preparatory and physicians ask me to create personal programs for patients, boot camps for employees and low back pain prevention seminars for workers.
When I was young, to say I was a couch potato is an understatement. I couldn’t run around the block to save my life, I was always the last one to be picked for any athletic event, and I was tired all the time. In my early 20s I got tired of feeling tired and being “skinny fat.” I looked thin but my body fat was high, and I constantly complained about feeling tired. So, since I didn’t have a natural athletic cell in my body, I started to study the science of exercise (way before it was in vogue) and learn how I could make adaptations at the cellular level so that I could do more. Slowly but surely, I got myself fit. I was so stoked about how I felt and looked that I got my teaching certification from AFFA and ACE and started teaching aerobics at a big club in Atlanta. My class grew and so did my interest in changing bodies by applying exercise science. I got so interested in it that I quit my full-time job as a corporate loan officer (with an MBA) and got a Masters of Science in Exercise Science. Doing what I loved paid off and I graduated at the top of my class and my career helping others followed.
It has been and continues to be my mission for each client to live their dreams of a healthy, pain-free and fit lifestyle.

I have a favorite exercise for each of my clients and every one is different. That is because everyone has different needs. My favorite exercise for me is anything outdoors and aerobic because I love getting my heart rate up and being out in nature.

My training philosophy
I believe that while you must overload your muscles to get results, that it still can be fun and feel good. I believe that you must build your base, understand your body and then once you do you can work harder and know that you are doing it safely. I believe that exercise must fit into each person's lifestyle and that looks different for each person.

When I first started working out with Marilyn six months ago, I had severe back pain and poor balance. After one session my back felt much better and I canceled my orthopedic doctor appointment. She was also able to help me with a terrible knee problem. She decided it was coming from my balance issues and started exercises which gave me wonderful relief. I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to get fit safely. She follows up with videos and complete instructions. The videos she gives me are not generic, she customized them for me! I promise you won’t be disappointed!
Marilyn is great! She's been doing this for a very long time and it's clear from the first time you speak with her that she knows what she's doing and you're in excellent hands. Everything you do is extremely well catered to your current fitness level and is very flexible with the programming if something starts to go wrong. After 5 months or so, I'm as strong as I've ever been and doing exercises I wouldn't have even dreamed of doing even in high school, 10 years ago. Do what she says and you will see results.
Marilyn is truly my guru! I've been thru chiropractic, physical therapy, and orthopedics and occasionally using a cane, spending a great portion of my life in pain. But since I have been stretching with Marilyn, my back has never felt better and the cane went back into the closet. She knew how to design a program to fit my abilities and my limitations, as well as my schedule, and she is always available for questions and assistance. This is a great program!

I initially reached out to Marilyn at functional fitness guru because of nagging back pain. I am pleased to say that our workouts alleviated my back pain very quickly. Once the back pain was gone, Marilyn increased the intensity of our workouts to help me reach my new goals which included participating in adventurous Travel. Workouts are always tailored to meet my needs. They are hard work but a lot of fun! I actually look forward to working out now and feel a huge difference in my overall well-being! When I began working out with Marilyn, we did it locally and in person. I have since moved out of state and our workouts are now virtual. I was initially a little bit wary about virtual workouts, but they have been every bit as good. And, as an additional benefit, the virtual training has made it easy to fit in extra workouts that may only be 15 to 30 minutes. I get my best workouts with Marilyn! She is knowledgeable, professional and fun and I highly recommend her!

I have been working out with Marilyn for over 11 years. I am 74 years old and I’m indebted to Marilyn for having kept me in great shape. She’s a personable trainer with an excellent knowledge of the musculoskeletal system. Early on I was having knee pain and she felt it was coming from my back. Sure enough my knee pain resolved after we worked on the appropriate muscle groups. She is A+ all around!
