Fitness has played a pivotal role in my life. The main lessons I've taken away from fitness is patience, discipline, and having self confidence. I first considered having a personal trainer near the start of the coronavirus shutdowns. My gym closed down as I was hitting a stride with my personal fitness goals, and a couple of weeks into the coronavirus shutdowns had me feeling like I was losing the progress I had worked so hard to make. I needed a structured workout routine, something to keep me accountable, and the workout equipment to continue making progress without being able to go the gym. I initially didn't feel comfortable with the idea of a personal trainer; I've always had this image in my head that a personal trainer is meant for those are competing or who are extremely serious about their workouts, whereas I've always felt like an amateur just wanting to stay in relative shape. However, I decided to go for it and once I got started, I immediately saw and felt the difference it made in my personal fitness goals. Ryan starts by assessing your current fitness goals via a questionnaire, structuring a workout routine accordingly, and running you through it via an app to easily stay connected and updated as it tracks your goals and important metrics (ex/daily weight, daily stretch/workout routine). Now, I look back at my before and after pictures, and see the difference from when I first started, to now. I'm much leaner, stronger, and overall feel so much better than I did at the start of the pandemic. Having Ryan as my personal trainer, has by far been one of best decisions I've ever made for my personal fitness goals, and overall quality of life.
The structure that Ryan provides, compacts the complicated world of fitness into a digestible form. The ease of access to his workout programs through user-friendly apps has made the daunting task of just starting so much more approachable. Some of my objections before even thinking about getting a personal trainer was the self-doubt I had in myself to make any progress but with the plans and measures that he has established, I never felt alone. The fire was lit again and each in-person or programmed session felt like real progress after months of stagnation from my own half-assed workouts. My pull-ups went from 2 to 15, my form in all workouts has improved, and my muscle mass up in just over 4 months. My main goal of bulking up with proper nutrition has been a change of pace from my long-distance running goals but one that I could not see possible in such a small amount of time without Ryan's guidance. Ryan's knowledge of supplements, nutrition, and human psychology has been instrumental to my success, and picking the mind of someone educated on these matters will help me for life even beyond having a trainer.
Like many of us out there, I’ve had troubles with fitness goals. My main problem was having consistency. I didn’t give it my all and because of that, the results that I was looking for weren’t coming as I had expected. I hit plateaus, which mostly frustrated me, but it also made me have a narrow mindset. I was content with knowing that I had at least tried. But I hadn’t tried to my fullest potential, which was the problem. Ryan helped me get past these obstacles. If I’m being honest, I was skeptical on getting a personal trainer, as I would have to change the way I was doing things and the fear that I had was that if I didn’t meet up to a trainer’s expectations, I would be judged and be considered a failure. Although these are valid and reasonable thoughts, Ryan quickly ensured me that this was not the case with all personal trainers. He was great at keeping me accountable, which resulted in helping me break out of old, bad habits and gaining new, healthy ones. With his guidance, I was able to lose about 11 lbs while still getting stronger with my lifts (squats, bench, and deadlifts). I was able to go from 265 to 275 on squats and 295 to 315 on deadlifts, all within a couple of months. To those who are thinking about starting personal training but are hesitant, please give it a try. It can be intimidating to start, but when you look back at all the hard work that you put in to improve yourself, it’ll all be worth it. Although Ryan is quite new as a PT, he is very knowledgeable and very understanding. He meets you halfway. He encourages you to become a better version of yourself. He gets you results. Because of all this, I would HIGHLY recommend giving him a shot! You won’t regret it!
I made my theme of the year discipline and thought that getting back into the gym would be a great way to practice that. Starting on your own is TOUGH, especially when you don't really know what you're doing. I needed help. That's where personal training came in. After stating me need and goals, Ryan created a workout program that also gave me the flexibility of swapping some days to home workouts to fit my lifestyle. He checks in regularly to ensure I am performing the exercises correctly and to answer any questions I have on working out or nutrition. I especially like how he would encourage me to lift heavier and switch up the program from time to time with new exercises to keep things interesting. Working with Ryan has helped tremendously. I feel more comfortable in the gym now that I feel more informed. Physically, I'm a lot stronger, I have more energy than before, and because I work out, I was able to build my appetite back up from almost nothing. One surprising outcome I got from personal training is that it is also mentally beneficial which helps a ton in different parts of my life. Before I started working with Ryan, I didn't have a proper training plan and as a result, did not work out constantly and see results. I mainly wanted to lose some weight and gain muscle to get fit at the same time. Once I started working with Ryan, we had a plan that I could follow and started seeing results right away. In the past, my fitness journey wasn't a sustainable routine. It was always an all or nothing mindset. From running 3 miles in the morning, to cutting out carbs completely, and going to the gym in between classes - it was all a recipe for burn out. After giving birth my ligaments were very loose (high relaxin due to breast feeding), and I just kept hurting myself doing basic activities. After PT and pelvic floor rehabilitation were complete I knew I needed a capable, highly-flexible trainer to get me back on the road to fitness without hurting myself again.
