Mateo Dominguez
About Mateo
I'm an experienced dancer and choreographer with a background in ballet, modern, and contemporary dance. Having danced professionally, I now work as a freelance choreographer and exercise specialist. I believe that dance should be accessible to everyone, regardless of physical limitations. I specialize in conditioning the body for the demands of dance, helping both dancers and non-dancers increase strength, flexibility, stability, and stamina. My approach enhances posture, reduces injury risk, and promotes grace and body awareness, making dance easier and more accessible, whether someone is starting, returning, or looking to improve their skills. I believe that movement is just as important as strength and aesthetics. I want to unlock movements and skills for a wide range of clients so they can feel confident, resilient, and graceful, becoming dancers in form and function, even if dance isn’t their thing. For current dancers, I develop specialized programs for each individual to help optimize their body’s maximum potential in every facet of dance from control in adagio to explosiveness in grande allegro, making steps easier, and giving them control over their bodies, reducing the risk of injury.
A personal training session is a time to forget about the outside world and to do something for yourself. It's time that you own—work that you own. It's a chance to be present in your own body. It's easy to feel disembodied by daily life. Work usually entails sitting awkwardly in front of a computer all day. Even during those moments unplugged, the stresses of the world distract us from ourselves. I do more than coach exercises. I teach you how to feel your body, the minutiae of sensation as you do anything, whether it's working out, dancing, or even just walking down the street. I give you a safe space for improvement, learning, and healing.
My clients have a variety of different goals from losing weight, gaining muscle, learning how to look and move like a dancer, living without pain, or even just aging gracefully. My background as a professional dancer makes me versatile enough to adapt to any and all of your goals. Over the course of my training and career, starting at the age of seven, I studied various types of fitness and movement philosophies that have given me an intimate understanding of the human body. Fitness for me isn't something attained, but owned.
There are a million obstacles between you and your fitness goals. I can get you past them. Training can be dangerous without proper body awareness, especially if you're injury prone. Sessions with me are adaptable to all your aches and pains. Training is difficult; training can be scary. Sessions with me train your will as well as your body, emphasizing safety. This is confidence you can own and wield outside of the gym. Training can be boring. Sessions with me are fresh, dynamic, making you hungry to improve and become more capable.
If you're looking for someone who checks multiple boxes, who can help you achieve your dream physique, teach you ballet, and prepare you for the stresses of life, I'm your trainer.
My favorite quote
"The only thing I fear more than change is no change. The business of being static makes me nuts." -Twyla Tharp
My training philosophy
Training is meaningless if it's not sustainable. If a session makes you think "wow that was hard, I'll never do it again," then you won't achieve your goals. Going to the gym shouldn't take three hours. I assign my clients what I call "bang for your buck" exercises, where you're hitting multiple muscle groups at once, where you're training four or five different types of fitness in every exercise. You can get a full body workout without endless tedious exercises.
On the flip side, you should always be stronger than yesterday... within reason. Fight for one more rep than yesterday. Try the exercise a bit heavier. If you can do an ab exercise with weight then you should do it with weight. This way you can check off every exercise of a workout in a fraction of the time. Stronger than yesterday—sustainably.
