About Shatera

My name is Shatera Hillyer and I started my fitness journey at 14 years old. I started training because I wanted to change the way I looked and ended up changing how I felt about myself which positively impacted my life.
I have now been working with clients in corporate wellness and privately for 6 years. I recently moved back home to the DMV after 6 years of working as an Equinox Personal Trainer in NYC and am super happy to be back home amongst my family and friends.
I have worked with clients ranging from ages 17-74, with varying medical backgrounds and with various goals. I enjoy working with beginners as I love to teach and help to debunk the myths that diet culture has ingrained in so many of us. Depending on what your fitness goals are, a typical session with me includes both strength training and cardiovascular work as I believe that strengthening your bones and your heart is a major part of living a full and comfortable life. I also include some type of mental strengthening in my sessions as it all starts with what you BELIEVE you can do.
I love working with clients who are open to trying new things, eager to learn, want more for themselves than just a slim waist and who can learn to trust me as the professional to get them where they want to be.
I became a trainer because I do not believe that people should expect to end up in a walker or an assisted living home once they get to a certain age. I believe that even in our older ages that we can still be comfortably functional, feel good in our bodies and look great as well.

I've been with Shatera for a year and my goal was to get my fitness routine back on track after having a baby. Also, learning proper ways to do strength exercises since I am a cardio girl. I also wanted to finally do a pull up. I had just stopped going to the gym and being physical and initially I was worried PT would be really intimidating! Seeing you was like hanging out with a friend (who would stop mid-conversation to have me lift a heavy weight). Shatera and I worked together for 6 - 8 months. I was a new and reluctant member at the gym and Shatera was my first trainer. She motivated me to maintain a routine at the gym and helped me to make getting to the gym part of my weekly priorities. As a 50 plus year old woman, exercise was something I knew I needed to do regularly. I am not overweight, but I had to start doing something for my health and general well being. I tried many gyms and exercises, but nothing stuck. Once I decided to join the gym Shatera worked for, I was still reluctant to try a trainer. But when I met Shatera and started working with her, she made it all fun and manageable for me. So much so, that I began to really enjoy my time with her and look forward to it. She used lots of variety with weight training and cardio exercises - and good conversation to keep me engaged. My time training with Shatera was so positive, it helped me to become a gym person. I have been working with Shatera for a year. My goals are general conditioning and toning and Shatera has been wonderful to work with. I had taken a hiatus for a few years from working with a trainer so I needed to ease back into a workout routine. She was very encouraging as I got back into a good routine, while being very sensitive to past injuries. She has helped to motivate me and has taught me how to safely use the equipment when I am working out on my own. I have been working with Shatera for 2.5 years and my goals were to increase overall strength, particularly my core (to support my lower back - I've got herniated discs in my lumbar spine). As a secondary goal, I had wanted to lose some of the baby weight I've been struggling with for the past few years. I started working with her because motivation and finding time to workout were a huge challenges for me. However, working with Shatera really changed both of those areas for me. I looked forward to our workouts because they were accessible (easy) and fun, and I was always learning something new. I love that she paid such attention to proper form to prevent injury and helped me to stop and listen to my body when I needed to. I also loved that Shatera adjusted my workouts to accommodate my old (and unrelated!) injuries to make sure I wasn't overextending myself and risking re-injury. Shatera is super motivating and fulfilling. Each workout left me feeling better than when I came in and I definitely saw changes in my core strength. I truly loved working out with Shatera because she cared not just about my physical body, but also how I was feeling emotional and she definitely took time to talk about life and everything else going on outside of the gym. There were also periods of time that I'd have to take extended breaks for work travel or and unrelated injury and Shatera would always text to check in to see how I was doing. I really appreciated these follow-ups because they were motivating and she showed care even outside of our gym sessions. I would 100% would recommend Shatera to anyone looking to get back on track, start something new, or just switch up their fitness regimen. I've worked with other trainers in the past, but none compare to Shatera. Over the past 2.5 years, Shatera has taught me so many things about how my body and muscles all work together and exactly how to target certain areas or get a full-body workout.
