About Robert

My name is Robert Blackwell and I am the owner of Blackwell Fitness. As a trainer, athlete, and student of health I have seven years of training experience, fifteen years of competitive athletics, and Bachelors and Masters degrees in exercise science to serve you and your goals. As an expert in the field, my goal for each client is to develop healthy, sustainable lifestyle habits for the long-term health and wellness. From youth sports to geriatric longevity, your goals are worth pursuing. My clientele ranges from someone just looking to improve their health to elite high school and college athletes. Unless someone is under close medical supervision or just had reconstructive surgery, I am equipped to train anyone for their desired goals. While each person has health and fitness goal that is unique to them, it is my goal for each person I work with to increase their capacity for a long healthy life.

My favorite client story

I had a client that got in touch with me through my mother-in-law. The client (she) was 78 years old, and was very active most of her life. Up until she was about 73 she was regularly hiking, biking, swimming, and rock-climbing. Her husband's health was in a rapid decline so she had to stop her active lifestyle to be his caregiver. Once the husband passed away, she was grieving, didn't have the energy to keep up her activity and became pretty sedentary. Her main goals when we started were to get strong enough to maintain her independence living in a two-story home. We met twice per week, and with each passing week her demeanor and attitude had a positive shift. She was reporting to me that her mood, quality of sleep, and body aches were improving as well. After a couple months of slow, patient work, she was able to end each session by walking downstairs backwards with little handrail support. She was getting comments from women in bible studies noticing that "Her posture and neck/back hunch were much better" and receiving internal and external validation that her efforts were not in vain. It was a really special experience to watch someone commit to their goals and use exercise to change her quality of life, independence, and outlook on everything.

My favorite exercise

For clients, I love posture corrective exercises. Having poor posture negatively effects your mobility, quality of sleep, breathing, blood circulation, and contributes to headaches, neck pain and back pain. Posture exercises require minimal equipment and are typically low-intensity, take a short amount of time, and are easy to learn. The benefits and ailments that proper posture corrects are tough to ignore, so I love to incorporate them into early training programs and teach the client to use them themselves regularly.

For me, my favorite exercise is running. I was a high school runner, a two-time All-American collegiate middle-distance runner, and a semi-elite post-collegiate runner. Currently, I'm more of a competitive hobby jogger, but I'll always love it as my favorite exercise.

My training philosophy

As a coach, I firmly believe that it is my responsibility to use my experience and education to facilitate positive changes in the lives of those around me. I believe in coaching with positive reinforcement and holding the client accountable for the goals they have set for themselves. As someone that is making an active effort to improve their health and overall quality of life, I want you to feel invested in and I want you to believe that your goals matter and are worth pursuing.

Coaching is an ongoing process that requires intentional communication between the coach and the client. Encouragement is a powerful tool when it is used correctly, and it is one of my favorites. I believe you can be the best version of yourself and want to help you get there.

My training experience

I started training clients as a senior in college. Started off as private, sport specific youth athletes that wanted to get stronger, faster, and more explosive. From there, my clientele expanded to include seniors and active adults in their middle-age that needed a specialized exercise program to improve longterm health. Over the last seven years my training experience has included athletes, sedentary adults, active adults, novice exercisers, flexibility and mobility, strength and conditioning, balance and coordination, core development, and speed, agility and quickness.
