Mendel laughs, remembering how she used to advertise using tear-off fliers before the dawn of the internet.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;" /><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">After 20 years as a personal trainer, Mendel looked around and realized most of her clients were over 60. It dawned on her how underserved that community was in the fitness industry, so she decided to rebrand her personal training company exclusively for seniors and call it Baby Boomers and Beyond Fitness. The transition into serving exclusively clientele over 60 was easy, Mendel says.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;" /><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">&ldquo;I know the age-appropriate exercises. I know how to make someone feel comfortable, avoid injury and all that. I just thought that it was a great fit for me. And, my clients, I enjoy them so much. I really do enjoy training,&rdquo; she says.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;" /><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">The first thing Mendel does when she gets a new client is to make sure they have consulted with their doctor to learn about their limitations. After that, Mendel does a consultation at their home to assess what level the new client is starting at and develops a personalized plan.</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;" /><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">&ldquo;I start them off slowly. We start with low-impact activities and build up from there. We incorporate all kinds of elements, including cardiovascular strength and flexibility,&rdquo; Mendel says. &ldquo;I encourage them to listen to their body. And when we finish, my clients are just overjoyed. They didn&rsquo;t realize they could do what they&rsquo;re doing.&rdquo;</span><br style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;" /><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Raleway, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Mendel&rsquo;s sessions last 50 minutes. She always begins with a 10-minute warmup and ends with five to 10 minutes of body flexibility or assisted stretching. She recalls one couple who she has been training for about a year. Mendel says that they seem transformed. After high school, I served in the US Marine Corps Reserve, attended Los Angeles Valley College, and played football on a full athletic scholarship at CSU Long Beach. <br><br>Additionally, I worked at Florida State University as an assistant strength and conditioning coach while earning a B.S. in Physical Education/Sports Administration. At Florida State I worked with the football, swimming, basketball, tennis, and baseball NCAA teams as their respective strength coach. From 1996 to 2009, I worked as the Head Strength and Conditioning coach at Pepperdine University where I worked with every team on the campus. The residential home I live in has a two car garage that I have converted into an excellent gym. My gym consists of four pieces of cardio equipment, weights, bench, pull-up bar, punching bag, etc. all on regular gym flooring. Since my gym is private (only one or two people at a time), my clients can do exercise combinations that could never be done in a public gym. <br><br>Regarding COVID-19, I am taking precautions to be as safe as possible. Since the open garage is essentially the same as working outdoors, it is much safer than being in an enclosed area like a public gym. Additionally, I disinfect all equipment after each use. Starting at a young age, Johnathan Smith was an elite athlete playing in various sports as Team Captain of his football and basketball team to practicing mixed martial arts. At a young age, he wanted to train to develop his body.<br> <br>In 2008, he had been in a series of accidents including being hit by a semi-truck on the side of the road. His body was broken and had many aches, soft tissue injuries and physical pain. He was also diagnosed with scoliosis from the accident. I started training myself at age 17 with a goal to improve my body and make my high school basketball team. Since then I have never stopped training and always work to improve my craft and gain more knowledge daily. I have a passion for helping others, whether it be toddlers and grade school kids or seniors and elderly or recovering addicts everybody deserves a better lifestyle and to enjoy this life they lead. I train focusing on the BMLT method (beginning movement load theory) meaning I focus at the beginning and end ranges of your movement so you can gain real strength and learn to enhance your mobility and flexibility creating flow from within. I am vegan athlete specifically raw vegan so I consume mainly living foods not cooked or process foods and I specialize in helping others transition to a vegan diet and lifestyle as I believe this is ideal for optimum health. I started out teaching after school programs for elementary school kids in Phoenix, AZ and then worked my way up to collegiate athletes and professionals. I have trained in several gyms across the country, core 4 in Atlanta, and IMG academy in Bradenton, FL alongside MLB, NFL, NBA and Olympic athletes. I trained athletes in 7 sports as the strength and conditioning coach at UWS for 1.5 years before returning to the hardwood to play professional basketball. Being from the south I have seen men and women and children struggle with obesity, torn ligaments and mental struggles and i attribute the pain to the lack of knowledge in the areas of diet and lifestyle. It’s an easy fox and I am here to help you gain self empowerment to make those changes. I helped my mother overcome type II diabetes and my wife overcome an eating disorder and mental health issues and get off of medication and compete in the NPC bodybuilding championships. There's an initial fitness assessment and medical history that takes place during the first session. The first session is 1.5 hours long but you only pay for the hour.&nbsp;</p><br><p>I start from where you are now (taking into consideration any injuries, or medical issues such as high blood, pressure, diabetes, etc.) to get you from point A to point B. As you master each step, I up the difficulty so you are always gaining results. The routines are varied as we continue and includes, warm up, strength training, aerobic endurance,&nbsp; rehab exercises if needed along with a 10 minutes stretching and cool down to increase range of motion and flexibility.</p><br><p>Although I can train clients from 19-90 years old, my main target market are those ages 35 -70 who are serious about their health. These people can be those who don't fit the "general workout routines" due to injuries (elbow, shoulder, lower back or knees perhaps??) and don't know HOW they can workout without hurting themselves.</p><br><p>They can be those needing motivation especially with new workouts geared to the 35+. year old body. They come to realize that weight does not come off as easily as it did in their 20's. They can be those needing accountability so as not to neglect their health while tending to their careers and many responsibilities.&nbsp;</p><br><p>I offer remote online training so I can reach more people. You don't need a lot of equipment so don't think, "Oh no, I don't have gym set up in my house!" There are ways to work out your body with equipment at hand (furniture, table, body resistance) and if you wish, the few pieces of equipment (should you wish to buy them) are not expensive.&nbsp;</p><br><p>As for me, I've been a certified master trainer since 2003. I have trained clients from 19-90, received certifications in stretching techniques and rehab, and have come across all types of people with all types of different personalities and fitness levels.&nbsp;</p><br><p>What got me started as a trainer? My own health and wellbeing took a hit at the ripe age of 26. Formally a track and basketball player, I found myself huffing and puffing after only walking a couple of blocks. I was a mom of 3 by this time.&nbsp; I decided to back into shape to feel better and as a result it not only got me in shape, but was a great stress outlet due to those lovely endorphins. I have been a trainer for the past 5+ years and have worked in a commercial gym, strength gym and clinical setting at a physical therapy office. I am able to service a very wide range of clients from beginners to advanced lifters to post-rehab. My sessions are typically focused on making sure the exercises are catered to YOUR mobility/flexibility and I will never put you in a position that you do not "own." Meaning that if your arm can't go overhead without compensating, there is no world where I would ever give you a dumbbell for an overhead press. Sounds like a no brainer but you'd be surprised at what you see at the gym. <br><br>I value mobility and proper movement over maximal effort, but that doesn't mean I can't give you a good kick in the pants! I try to educate as much as I can during my sessions so that you are learning the "why" for the movements I am asking you to do. Realistically, I can't be with you for every workout so I want you to have the confidence to know that what you are doing isn't going to hurt you if you go to the gym on your own. If you are just trying to get your butt whooped with no regard of form, then I am not the trainer for you. If you want to move better, and train smarter, then please message me or sign up!
